Pak gives the reader such a great flashback that shows how great a friend Lana has always been, but most importantly, gives us one of the most important moments in young Clark's life. ![]() We then get another quick peek at the dark side of Smallville. I don't know if it's just me, but Hiro is starting to feel like the annoying neighbor that nobody likes, but keeps getting forced on the audience. This week he gets help from Hiro (aka Toymaster), if help means Hiro getting trapped as well. Superman is where we left him last month, desperately trying to get through the Mist and out of Smallville. ![]() This latest story involving a mysterious Mist surrounding Smallville may be all too familiar to Stephen King fans, but the combination of horror and action has been a welcome addition to this book and a nice post-Doom story. If you ask me, the Doomed story derailed a good thing and Pak has been working hard to get back on track since it ended. He brought back a classic feel to the book and reminded fans how great Lana Lang is. But that's like 10% of the book and the rest is inconsistent, repetitive, convoluted for no reason, bogged down with descriptions of things that never matter (and often change the next time they come up, if they ever do), and full of so many continuity errors that you'd think it was written by committee and never proofread, let alone edited, before publication.Įven without the constantly shifting and inconsistent magic system, the total lack of consistency in what the main character (and 1st person narrator) knows, and the magical items that work completely differently chapter to chapter (like, full on totally different and contradictory mechanisms, mechanics, etc etc, on the same item, depending on the page), there's still the repetitive writing style with the same phrases being used, overused, and then used again until you want to rip the author to shreds and lend him a bloody phrase book.ĪND THEN! There's the aggressively redundant bits. The author is half decent at writing a dungeon crawl.
