Their budding romance is complicated by their lack of understanding about each others culture and the big gap in family income, but cemented by their shared love of golf as well as by Ryan’s coming to grips with how unfairly Fred is treated, and then by Seth’s going over the top attacks on her. He also can’t stop thinking about her, first as a problem, but as time goes on, more as a good team player and as someone he can’t stop liking…a lot. However his best friend and top player on the team, Ryan can’t help feel uncomfortable about how Seth treats Fred. He makes it his mission to harass and sabotage Fred’s life and golf game. That turns out to be Seth who is rich, arrogant and on the mean side of racist. In order for her to be on the team, the coach has to dismiss a player. When the coach of the high school golf team notices how focused she is when hitting on the driving range, he recruits her for the boys high school team. Fred is Native American and is one of a small number of reservation teens attending a local high school. Fred’s older brother works at a gas station and is pretty good at fixing vehicles. Her mom is a waitress at the reservation’s big restaurant. Her dad is a groundskeeper at a club outside Phoenix. Hooked by Liz Fichera, Harlequin Teen Original edition (January 29, 2013).
